Ascension Update: 25 June 2007

Introduction:

Before I begin, let me introduce myself. I’m FL Dark, my boss *cough* “slave driver” *cough*, Teratos forced me to join RenWerX to help find ways of distribution for this game, increase site updates and several other goodies which I am unable to speak of at this moment.

What’s New? And where have we been?

Let me assure you that despite the lack of formal updates lots has been going on with the RenWerX Team and our baby Ascension. To just show off a little of what we have been working on, below you will find screenshots of a brand new unnamed level by Exadon and also a few in game photos of other various objects/levels and even gun firing effects! Enjoy!

Interview:

To go along with the photos of the new level, I sat down with Exadon our level designer extraordinaire to ask him a few questions about the level he’s designing, his sat scores and well… you get the point, just read it!

What exactly are you trying to accomplish with this map? And is the style of this map geared more towards Capture the Flag or a Death Match type map?

Exadon: “One of the things I want to accomplish with this map is to have the player emerged in the world that I create. Specifically, in a "FPS-Z" style game, players tend to move at a fast pace…So it is often easy to reach one side of the building to the other…I want the factory to be massive...

In terms of the playing style – expect the standard CTF type map with two bases on each side; however, I also would like to make it a capture and hold map with two bases in the center...”

Are you going to be able to interact with any objects in this level (levers, switches, blowing up crates)?

Exadon: “You will be able to interact with some of the objects (like the teleport devices I made); But my main job as a level designer-at this time-is to create the DIF interiors (aka objects that cannot be moved or be destroyed).

However, I have plans for some objects being interactive…how much I can or can not do will be set by my own limitations as a modeler and how much I can fit in with time limitations.

For example, I thought it would be neat to re-model the crane used in my level as a model that players could interact with. This would allow the player to move the flag as part of flag defense…again all just ideas…not sure how they would run in the game, guess that is what beta is for =)

But the normal FPS things like exploding crates and so on should be no problem to include in this map.

Oh and either on this map or a future map of mine we are planning to have a working metro car , but, nothing Is final though…”

Is this level going to be playable in closed/open beta?

Exadon: “I think so, I hope so!”

Before I let you go, is there anything else you would like to say?

Exadon: “I would also like to say that the factory was very hard for me to design, see…. I love fantasy and abstract buildings…so buckling down with a style of faction that works for "function" was something I did not aspect…if you would have seen some of my earlier level designs…well…let’s just say they look a lot different now, lol.”

Well, thank you Exadon for your time and we will all be anxiously waiting to test out your level.

Exadon: “No problem, Thank you”

We are still hiring!

We are currently looking for an experienced GUI Editor/Coder - must know client and server scripting, must be able to design GUIs, must be able to work in a team.

There are also many other jobs that are in need of filling and if you think you might be interested in helping out contact us via the Contact Us form on the Renwerx or Ascension Game web sites or PM Badazz on the forums.  To speed up the application process, all applicants will need to have a portfolio showing off there work before they apply for a position.
